Above are the ranks that may be earned though some may be temporary, meaning you are only assigned to that rank for a specific amount of time. You will return to your original rank (before assigned temporary rank) once that time or job has been completed. You MUST salute to all officers (such as Senior Staff and Flight Commanders).

What are Merits and Demerits?
Merits and demerits is a system in which cadets will be marked for either breaking the rules or following them. This helps to ensure that cadet are rewarded/punished fairly for their actions. This system also helps cadets with getting promoted. If they earn enough merits and pass the test for the next rank, the cadet may be promoted. On the other hand, demerits marks any rules or actions a cadet may be doing wrong. If enough merits are accumulated, they may not be eligible for promotion and may even be de-ranked. Cadets will be overlooked by their Flight Commanders and Sergeants. Flight Commanders and Sergeants will be overlooked by Senior Staff and they will be overlooked by the instructors.
Demerits may be taken off once a cadet has required the Disciplinary Board but if there is failure to meet that within the 2 weeks that the demerit is issued, it will stay with the cadet and can affect them from participating in events or promotions. Merits on the other hand are awarded to cadets who become involved with AFJROTC or demonstrate your effort.

Q: How can I earn a Demerit?
A: There are several ways that a cadet can get a Demerit such as violating uniform regulations such as: being out of uniform before the final bell, not wearing your flight cap/wearing it in an inappropriate manner, fighting, disrespecting fellow cadets, Public Display of Affection in uniform (PDA), and misrepresenting AFJROTC.
When a cadet receives a demerit, they hold the risk of being ineligible for promotions, field trips or activities in the Corps unless they have been worked off. This may also limit them if they are in a team until they are cleared. Receiving more than 5 demerits will lead to a referral of the Disciplinary Board. A single demerit may count as several, depending on the severity of the offense.

Q: How can I earn a Merit?
A: A cadet can earn a Merit by doing some of the following: having a good behavior/attitude as well as helping out fellow cadets, volunteering with or without assigned task with enthusiasm or excellence and helping out with tasks to help improve the core.
Merits can demonstrate your involvement in AFJROTC and wish to gain more responsibility. They help serve as a reward for your efforts and may help, such as assisting with promotions, job opportunities and further responsibility. Merits will be recorded throughout your time in the AFJROTC Program.

Some of these ribbons may be awarded more than once, a cluster then being placed on the center of the ribbon once it has been earned two or more times. Ribbons may be awarded up to 4 times to a cadet. If there is a concern or question about a ribbon a cadet has earned or should have earned, contact the Awards Officer or Instructors.
Remember to place the ribbons in the order presented above as the highest ribbon should be on your top left side if you have a rack. If you do not have a rack, simply place it to the left, facing towards your name tag.
